Exhibition: German Heritage in Ukraine

11 November 2024

At the UNESCO center in Regensburg, an exhibition titled "German Heritage in Ukraine" is taking place.

This exhibition has been brought from Odessa and features a variety of historical materials that illustrate the lives of German settlers in the Odessa region since the early 19th century, along with their contributions to the development of Odessa and its surroundings.

The exhibition is divided into three sections: historical, artistic, and contemporary. The historical part was prepared by renowned historian Oleksandr Surilov, while the artistic section showcases paintings by Odessa artist Tatyana Romanenko in oil and watercolor.

The exhibition also demonstrates the cooperation between Regensburg and Odessa, particularly the support Regensburg has provided to Odessa since the onset of the full-scale invasion.

It was organized with the support of the Departments of Culture and International Cooperation of both cities.

At the opening, Odessa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov and Regensburg Mayor Gertrud Maltz-Schwarzfischer welcomed guests, including historians, scholars, and members of the Ukrainian community in Germany.

Hennadiy Trukhanov expressed gratitude for the support of Odessa, stating:

"Soon we will mark a thousand days of war, but we will also celebrate a thousand days of heroic defense and the tremendous support that Ukraine receives from European countries, particularly from Regensburg".

The mayor emphasized that during the war, Odessa has become a refuge for tens of thousands of displaced persons, just as it was during the times when Ukrainians, Germans, Jews, and other peoples found their homes here. Each contributed their part to the development and culture of our city, creating its uniqueness.

"German culture has significantly influenced agriculture and infrastructure in our region. We cherish this contribution and preserve its memory while striving to strengthen our ties".

Today, the relationship between Odessa and Regensburg remains strong and unwavering, just like our faith in victory and the independence of Ukraine. We believe in a better future and know that together we can overcome any challenges.
