World Press Photo Exhibition 2024: Reflections on War

Today, December 6, the World Press Photo 2024 exhibition opened at the Odesa National Art Museum. 

This year, the «Open Format» category was won by the series of photographs titled «War is Personal» by Ukrainian photographer Yuliya Kochetova.

Also reaching the finals for the European region was Johanna Maria Fritz's project «Kakhovka Hydroelectric Station Dam: Flood in the Combat Zone», created during the evacuation of civilians amid the flooding. 

The exhibition tour in Ukraine is organized by the Odesa Photo Days Festival. The display features 129 photographs documenting war, protests, migration and climate crises, as well as other significant events from 2023. Finalists were selected from over 61,000 entries submitted by 3,851 participants from 130 countries.

The exhibition's presence in Ukraine is made possible thanks to the support of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Ukraine. Kyiv was the first city on the exhibition tour, where from late October to mid-November, 1,000 visitors attended the exhibit at the Dovzhenko Center.

In total, the exhibition will showcase works from each of the 31 regional winners from 24 countries: Argentina, Australia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Canada, China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Myanmar, Palestine, Peru, the Philippines, South Africa, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, the United States, and Venezuela.

The exhibition will run from December 6, 2024, to January 12, 2025.

The World Press Photo Foundation is an independent organization supporting photojournalists and documentary photographers while promoting the development of global photojournalism. The organization runs its own academy, offers masterclasses and seminars.

Odesa Photo Days is an international contemporary photography festival established in 2015 in response to the war in Eastern Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea. Since February 24, 2022, the festival has not been held, but the team collaborates with Ukrainian photographers and the international community to spread awareness about the war in Ukraine and assist those affected.
