Modern interpretation of the opera “Zaporozhets beyond the Danube”
The Odesa National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet has unveiled a fresh rendition of the opera «Zaporozhets beyond the Danube», showcasing contemporary approaches to direction, costume design, and choreography that break away from traditional clichés.
Details of the new production
The production features minimalist sets and innovative lighting solutions. Interactive video projections transport the audience from the rural landscapes of the 18th century to the present day.
The new costume collection blends traditional Ukrainian elements with avant-garde silhouettes and materials. Designers have moved away from clichéd outfits, creating sleek costumes that reflect the spirit of the Cossack era through a modern lens.
The choreography retains the energy of folk dances while rejecting outdated stereotypes in movement. Unique dance styles combine elements of contemporary ballet and ethnic performance art, highlighting the patriotic themes of the opera.
The project's goal is to convey the history of the Cossacks and their struggle for freedom to a contemporary audience while preserving the authenticity of the original. The production appeals to the values of independence and bravery, emphasizing the relevance of these themes today.
