Cultural Initiatives in Ukraine: The Role of Museums in Society

23 May 2025

On May 18, 2025, the world celebrated International Museum Day, emphasizing the crucial importance of museums in preserving cultural heritage and promoting education.

More than 40 countries participated in the «Night of Museums», transforming cultural spaces into venues for creative exchange.

Over 3,000 museums opened their doors late into the night, offering visitors a variety of programs: from exhibitions to performances, film screenings, and interactive events.

This year's theme was «The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities», reflecting contemporary challenges.

Despite the ongoing war, Ukrainian museums continue their work. Exhibitions dedicated to the memory of the fallen and initiatives supporting national heritage remain essential elements of cultural life.

The Odessa Municipal Museum of Personal Collections named after O.V. Bleschunov participated in the «Night of Museums» with a new exhibition titled «Connection» by artist Sofia Golubeva, exploring the theme of women's support during wartime.

«This is more than just an exhibition; it's a new perspective on closeness when old words no longer suffice,» said Sofia Golubeva.

Complementing the exhibition was a lecture by the artist, where she shared insights into the creation process and the art that arises from experiences of loss and shared struggle.

On May 24 at 2:30 PM, a painting workshop entitled «Figure in Water» will take place, open to anyone interested. Participants will explore how to depict a figure in water through light and shadow.

The exhibition «Connection» will be open until June 8.

The museum is open Thursday through Sunday, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Address: 19 Polish Street (entrance from the yard).
