29 August 2024

August 29 is commemorated in Ukraine as a day to remember the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the nation's freedom and independence.

In Odesa, the morning began with a tribute to the fallen and the laying of flowers at memorials in a military cemetery.

The Heroes' Memorial Day was established by presidential decree in August 2019 to honor the bravery of military personnel and volunteers who died for their homeland.
This date was chosen deliberately, as 10 years ago, a significant breakthrough by Ukrainian forces occurred during the conflict in eastern Ukraine, symbolizing the heroism of defenders.
The sunflower has become a symbol of remembrance, as many Ukrainian soldiers laid down their lives in fields of these flowers for freedom and independence.
On August 29, we remember not only those who perished in this tragedy but also the thousands of other heroes who have died since 2014 in the ongoing war.
