Preparing Schools in Odesa for the New Academic Year

23 July 2025

As the new academic year approaches, educational institutions in Odesa are undergoing extensive preparations.

The primary focus is on ensuring the safety of children: currently, 90 out of 120 schools have their own shelters. Modernization efforts continue.

A notable example is School No. 62, where engineers successfully relocated a complex communication system, deepened the basement floor, and reinforced the foundation. Now, more than 500 children will be able to attend their native school simultaneously.

The shelter will also be open to local residents.

At School No. 122, existing shelters are being expanded, the sports hall is being renovated, and STEM laboratories are being created — steps that reflect not only protection but also educational development and early specialization.

Both schools had previously suffered from shelling. Today, educators and builders are fully restoring their operations.

“We are not just repairing walls; we are creating a safe, comfortable, and inspiring environment where children want to grow and develop,” commented Odesa's Deputy Mayor Pavlo Vuhelman.

In total, nearly 325 million UAH has been allocated for repair work in the city's education sector this year. Work is also ongoing in Lyceums No. 125 and Mykhailivskyi, Gymnasiums No. 12 and No. 61.

Thanks to international partners, Kindergarten No. 14 is being restored, while Kindergarten No. 29 is already welcoming children.

“Thanks to everyone involved — educators, builders, deputies, parents, and partners. Childhood is singular, and caring for it is the true meaning for Odesa,” said the director of the Department of Education and Science, Olena Buynievych.
