Illuminating the Middle Ages: A Fresh Perspective on Ancient Times
On April 26, 2025, a lecture-discussion took place at the Odessa National Scientific Library as part of the Doktrina Solis public educational project, supported by the Odessa Regional Council of Peace and the Department of Philosophy at I.I. Mechnikov Odessa National University. The speaker was Vadim Chepizhenko, a candidate of historical sciences and associate professor.
Participants were welcomed by project coordinator Olena Konovalenko, who emphasized the importance of discussing cultural aspects of the Middle Ages.
In his lecture, Vadim Chepizhenko explored the Middle Ages, focusing on the stereotypes associated with this period, such as the notions of brutality and darkness that often dominate popular culture.
The lecture began with a critique of traditional views of the Middle Ages as a time of cultural stagnation, highlighted by contemporary research.
The term “Middle Ages” originated in Italy between the 10th and 16th centuries when progressive intellectuals sought to reinterpret the legacy of antiquity. This era is characterized by four main scientific directions: physical-cosmic, theories of light, studies of the living, and astrological-medical knowledge, including alchemy.
The speaker also emphasized that the Middle Ages laid the foundation for the development of European civilization. In examining the topic of the “Dark Ages,” opinions were expressed about the true nature of this period. Humanists and romantics evaluated this era differently, trying to find both dark and bright sides.
Listeners were captivated by stories about various aspects of life during the Middle Ages, including the cultural achievements that shaped the worldview of people at that time. The lecture was accompanied by a presentation that deepened the understanding of the topic. Attending philosophers, cultural scientists, and students actively asked questions, and the event was broadcasted live.
