Japan Reinforces Support for Ukraine with New Initiatives

19 November 2024

During his visit to Ukraine, Japan's newly appointed Foreign Minister, Mr. Takeshi Iwaya, emphasized Japan's commitment to continuing support for the country, including a new aid package for the energy sector.

The Japanese government is one of the key partners of UNDP in Ukraine, consistently funding the procurement of equipment for the restoration of critical infrastructure.

Odessa has already received the first gas engine cogeneration unit with a capacity of 3.3 MW, and installation is currently underway. The city expects to receive two more similar units soon, which will cover approximately one-third of the energy needs of critical infrastructure for water, heating, and sewage services.

The Mayor of Odessa noted that during the full-scale war, the city is actively building its own energy system under difficult conditions and under fire.

«We are immensely grateful to Japan, our sister city Yokohama, which was the first to support us, to the UNDP team, and to all other countries that are joining us to build the foundation of our resilience together with the people of Odessa,» said Gennady Trukhanov.
