Italian Parliamentarians Visit Odessa

03 October 2024

The Mayor of Odessa, Hennadiy Trukhanov, met with a group of Italian parliamentarians led by Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies, Mr. Giorgio Mulè, who heads the Italian section of the interparliamentary cooperation group between Italy and Ukraine. The Ambassador of the Italian Republic in Ukraine, Mr. Carlo Formosa, was also present at the meeting.

During the discussion, it was noted that Italy is sponsoring the restoration of Odessa, and the parliamentarians came to personally familiarize themselves with the city and its landmarks, as well as to assess the extent of the destruction and identify specific recovery needs. This will allow them to better understand the resources and support needed for effective reconstruction and restoration.

The parties also discussed promising areas for investment, with culture being a key focus. The Italians are confident that history cannot be erased, no matter its nature.

«History evolves, and we must grow with it, accepting its various moments. Many operas in Italy were written during fascism, and buildings were constructed. But this is no reason to avoid visiting them or to demolish them. Art belongs to the world!» - expressed a shared opinion, Mr. Mulè.

The Italian deputies expressed their solidarity with the mayor and the people of Odessa regarding the preservation of heritage, which has contributed to Odessa's status as a UNESCO City of Literature.
