Barrier-Free Odessa: New Opportunities for Everyone

05 February 2025

Members of the Odessa City Council have approved changes to the "Equality" program, which is now renamed "Barrier-Free Odessa."

Among the main changes: this year, a beach for individuals with disabilities is planned to be opened at the 11th station of the Great Fountain.

Odessa's mayor, Gennady Trukhanov, stated that the preliminary estimate for the capital works is 21.3 million UAH. On February 5, funds were allocated during the Odessa City Council session for the development of project documentation, which will provide a more precise figure.

The last renovation of the beach took place in 2019. The aggressive marine environment has necessitated repairs to the ramp, stairs leading to the beach, and the installation of a new decking. The medical point and restroom will also be renovated, including updates to the sewage system.

"Our resort city is currently the only one that provides conditions for marine rehabilitation of people with limited mobility, including veterans who have lost limbs in the war and children with disabilities," said Gennady Trukhanov.

The mayor also reminded that plans are in place to implement an inclusive sports playground project at the "Dolphin" beach in preparation for the new health season. This decision has been approved by the Executive Committee.

Moreover, the Odessa mayor added that the municipality aims to establish a strong rehabilitation and wellness base in Southern Ukraine. As part of the program, equipment worth over 20 million UAH is planned for purchase to equip rehabilitation departments in hospitals, along with 1.2 million UAH for creating inclusive wards in other healthcare facilities in the city.

Additionally, one of the program's points proposes to expand the capabilities of the city service "Social Taxi" for transporting individuals with mobility impairments.
