Transforming Cities for All: A New Perspective on Accessibility
On the streets of Ukraine, the presence of wheelchair users has been increasing, as many have been injured due to the ongoing conflict. Unfortunately, this trend continues to rise daily, highlighting the urgent need for creating a comfortable environment for everyone, regardless of their health condition.
Odesa is recognized as a leader in inclusivity efforts. Mayor Gennady Trukhanov has declared 2025 the Year of Barrier-Free Accessibility, reflecting a serious commitment to transforming the city.
The driving force behind these initiatives is the Barrier-Free Council, established last year. This advisory body brings together representatives from various sectors to collaboratively enhance accessibility.
According to Gennady Trukhanov, barrier-free accessibility is not just about physical access; it embodies a philosophy that ensures equal opportunities for all residents.
The council is working on a city strategy for barrier-free accessibility for 2025–2026, aligned with national priorities. Regular inspections of infrastructure are conducted by experts, including veterans and people with disabilities.
“Our priorities are set by individuals with disabilities because they best understand their needs. This is a collaborative effort that encompasses all areas of life,” emphasized Oleksiy Morozov, Deputy Head of the Council.
The council's primary goal is to unite the efforts of the government, veterans, and the community around barrier-free accessibility as a pressing contemporary issue.
