Recognition of a Young Ukrainian Hero

24 November 2025

Mark Avetikian, an 11th grader from Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi Lyceum No. 1, was personally honored by President Volodymyr Zelensky with the «Future of Ukraine» medal for his display of courage, patriotism, and active civic engagement. This was reported on the official social media pages of the educational institution.
«This medal is not just an award — it symbolizes that even in the hardest times, youth can inspire, take action, and defend the values that shape Ukraine's future,» – stated the Lyceum No. 1 in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi.

It is worth noting that on June 23 of this year, an enemy missile hit the lyceum, claiming the lives of three individuals. Fourteen people sustained injuries of varying severity, including two teenagers. One of them, 16-year-old Mark, not only managed to escape from the rubble but also saved his friend.
In August 2025, the Head of the Main Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Odesa region, Denys Platonov, awarded Mark Avetikian a badge for «Courage in Emergency Situations», and in September, during the Rescuer's Day, the young man was honored at the annual awards ceremony of the «Hero — Rescuer of the Year» initiative.
The «Future of Ukraine» medal is a state award established in May 2025 to recognize Ukrainian citizens, foreigners, and stateless persons under the age of 18 for their personal courage, bravery, resilience, patriotism, active civic participation, volunteer work, and upholding universal values and national interests of Ukraine.
