Odesa Activists Prepare Pushkin Monument for Easter

13 April 2025

Today, April 13, Odesa activists performed a unique action at the monument of Russian poet Alexander Pushkin located by the city hall on Primorsky Boulevard: they placed a noose on the monument and hung a sign that read ‘Looking for a bulldozer’.

According to a video shared online, some local residents were outraged by these actions.

“Is there nothing else to deal with?” – asked a man off-camera.

The outcome of the confrontation remains unknown.

As stated by Kateryna Musienko, head and founder of the youth organization “We Make You Nervous,” activists decided to “prepare the Pushkin monument for Easter” in this unconventional way.

“Today, the ‘We Make You Nervous’ activists prepared the Pushkin monument for Easter, clearly indicating that the figure should celebrate this holiday in a museum. We follow Ukrainian Easter traditions – we clear out all unnecessary things from our homes!” – she wrote on Facebook.

She also stated that “the history of occupation by the Moscow Empire and later the Soviet Union should be studied in textbooks and museum exhibitions.”

“Colonial past monuments have no place on the streets of a Ukrainian city,” – she firmly believes.

In her opinion, the city council, having the authority to dismantle the “Moscow figure” monument, not only ignores its duties but even dares to renovate the monument’s facade and plant flowerbeds around it.

“Let’s help Trukhanov find the equipment to demolish the ‘Russian world’ marker in the center of Odesa! Tear off the number from the ‘Looking for a bulldozer’ sign and call the mayor to expedite the process!” – urged Musienko.
