Debate on Lesya Ukrainka Monument in Odesa
In Odesa, there is an ongoing debate regarding the location of the monument to Lesya Ukrainka. Currently, city council members are considering a site in the Cosmonauts Park, which will be named in honor of the renowned poetess.
It is worth noting that the decision to install the monument was approved by the culture, tourism, and international relations committee back in spring. Suggested locations included Cosmonauts Park, Heroes Avenue (formerly known as Oleksandrivskyi Avenue), and Shevchenko Park.
Members of the historical and topographical commission reported to the city council that the site at Shevchenko Park is not suitable due to a nearby underground restroom, and a café is currently being constructed above it.
“The location in Shevchenko Park is not ideal. A site near the Lanzheron Arch was proposed. There are both positive and negative aspects. There was an underground restroom nearby, which has been purchased, and a café is planned in its place. If the café is built, will it be convenient next to the monument? The monument is very close to this building,” stated a member of the commission.
Thus, the elected officials plan to install the monument in Cosmonauts Park near the PCU temple, which will be built on the site of an existing structure.
