Revitalizing Greenery: Shaping Trees in Our City
Traditionally, at the end of winter, ahead of the vegetation period, specialists from the Municipal Enterprise «Miskzelentrest» perform essential formative pruning of weeping tree forms, including Japanese sophoras, mulberries, and ashes. This annual procedure is crucial for their maintenance.
The Japanese sophoras adorning the Theater Square were planted on September 25, 1895, and this year they will celebrate their 130th anniversary. These trees are recognized as state botanical monuments of local significance.
Starting from early February, landscapers have begun rejuvenation pruning of sophoras throughout the city. The work is done manually using pruning shears. The weeping crown shape for the Japanese sophora is artificially created, highlighting the necessity for regular pruning of this species.
This year, it is planned to conduct formative pruning of 463 weeping trees at locations managed by the Municipal Enterprise «Miskzelentrest» including the City Garden, Theater Square, Taras Shevchenko Park, and the «Luzanivka» Hydropark.

The Japanese sophora is a deciduous tree that reaches heights of 20-30 m in its native regions (Japan, China, Korea) and up to 10-12 m in temperate zones. It features a round crown and a strong root system. This tree is known for its longevity, living 500 years or more. In Odessa, sophoras were first used for landscaping in the 1820s.
