Winter Conservation of Fountains: New Approaches and Practices

Since the beginning of October, specialists from the Municipal Enterprise «Service Center» have initiated the seasonal conservation of fountains to ensure their safe preservation during the winter cold.

Conserving fountains is quite a complex task. To ensure that the water features survive the winter, it is necessary to blow out the water supply systems, dismantle nozzles, and electrical equipment. After removing the equipment, inspections and repairs are conducted as needed.

Typically, fountains in residential areas are prioritized for conservation, followed by those located in city parks. The central fountains receive the most attention and are closed last.

In recent years, the «Service Center» has implemented the practice of fully sealing the bowls of certain fountains. This method is actively used in the City Garden and Shevchenko Park. Due to the war, four fountains in the UNESCO zone have been completely closed and did not operate this year.

The process of de-conserving fountains will resume in the spring, usually by April 1 in the city center, with others following in April.

The «Service Center» manages 27 city fountains. In 2024, 17 fountains were de-conserved under its care. Weather and temperature are the main factors influencing their operation. 15 employees are responsible for their maintenance, which includes cleaning, repairs, and responding to vandalism.
