WhatsApp Introduces Enhanced Security Features for Users

28 January 2026

Meta is rolling out innovative security features in WhatsApp aimed at supporting journalists and other individuals who may be targets of cyberattacks.

This new feature, called "Enhanced Privacy Settings", allows users to activate additional privacy and security options alongside end-to-end encryption. It includes the following:

  • Account Protection: two-step verification is enabled. Security notifications are turned on and access is restricted. End-to-end encrypted backups are recommended for users who have enabled backup.
  • Messaging and Media: attachments and media from unknown senders will be blocked. Link previews are disabled.
  • Calls: calls from unknown numbers are hidden. Your IP address is also concealed during calls.
  • Profile and Status: your last seen time and online status, profile picture, and status are hidden from other users except for your contacts or a predefined list.
  • Groups: only known contacts or specific criteria-based lists can add you to groups.

The new security features on WhatsApp are available for activation in the app on iOS, Android, and Mac, and each can be enabled individually in the "Privacy" section of settings.
