Environmental Challenges in Odesa and Mykolaiv Regions

09 December 2025

The consequences of military conflict and technological incidents present significant risks to the environment in the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions, as reported by the State Ecological Inspectorate of the Southwestern District.
Experts emphasize that soil contamination with toxic substances and combustion products is evident in the area, affecting land fertility and environmental safety.
At the same time, the negative impact on water resources remains palpable — the Black Sea, estuaries, and river systems suffer due to infrastructure destruction and repeated strikes on port facilities.
“Air quality is deteriorating due to explosions, fires, and industrial activities during shelling. Additionally, natural areas — coastal zones and steppe ecosystems are losing biodiversity and natural balance,” – states the report. Eco-inspectors continue to carry out instrumental measurements, document pollution incidents, and respond promptly to citizen complaints. “Monitoring is ongoing, and data is entered into the ‘EcoThreat’ system, allowing for an accurate picture of ecological risks.
Collaboration with scientific institutions continues to identify effective methods for cleaning soils and water resources,” – emphasizes the eco-inspection.
