Ukraine: A Leader in Drone Manufacturing

Ukraine has emerged as a "leading nation in drone technology", meeting military needs and expanding its export presence in international markets. Domestic companies produce around four million UAVs annually, according to Bloomberg.
These include both affordable FPV models and advanced strike drones. The publication notes that the U.S. manufactures about 100,000 military drones each year.
"Not just in quantity, but also in diversity — probably more than all NATO countries combined," said RAND analyst Michael Bonert.
Some Ukrainian manufacturers have successfully entered the European market. For instance, Skyeton has established a facility in Slovakia and formed partnerships with Denmark and the UK. This company specializes in manufacturing reconnaissance UAVs that can fly for up to 24 hours.
Another domestic company, TSIR, is currently operating in Finland, preparing to launch a UAV production line with plans to supply drones for NATO.
Funding is a crucial factor. The FlyWell consortium, which brings together several Ukrainian drone manufacturers, aims to raise around $50 million to support additional European production and research projects, including the development of hydrogen power elements for UAVs. Relocating production to Europe will create a secure environment as they will be out of reach of Russia.
European companies are also active in innovation. Finnish company Summa Defence is self-funding production and has already created prototypes of three models that can be mass-produced immediately after testing in Ukraine. A portion of the output will go to NATO countries, but Ukraine remains a priority.
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the launch of mass production for a new model of UAVs that will serve as an alternative to Chinese Mavic drones. According to him, an alternative has been found, but details about these new drones have yet to be revealed.
