Maintenance of Odesa's Water Structures: Importance and Procedures

22 October 2025

To ensure the efficiency of water structures in Odesa, specialists from the municipal enterprise «City Roads» conduct regular cleaning operations.

The buffer pond, Romanian canal, and Kuyalnik ditches are essential water structures designed to drain rainwater and meltwater from the city's streets.

Using specialized machinery, municipal workers clear the channels and ponds of grass, reeds, debris, and sludge. Particular attention is given to the most sedimented areas where runoff from private homes accumulates.

The Kuyalnik ditch is the main drainage ditch, measuring 4650 m in length. It runs along Vapnyana Street and Khadzhibey Road, continuing through filtration fields to the drainage pumping station. This ditch diverts drainage, rain, and meltwater from neighborhoods adjacent to Vapnyana and Khadzhibey roads.

Regular cleaning of storm drains and drainage collectors throughout the city is also performed. Heavy equipment such as excavators with specialized attachments, graders, and high-pressure hydraulic units based on MAN vehicles are used for flushing the pipes.

In the event of heavy rainfall, these tasks are carried out on an emergency basis.
