Illegal Fisherman Apprehended at Katlabug Lake
At the beginning of October, during a patrol, officers from the Izmail district water police, in collaboration with the Odessa fish protection patrol, caught a 63-year-old man unloading biological resources from a boat at Katlabug Lake, using prohibited nets.
The police reported this incident.
Officers seized a boat, 150 meters of gill nets, and 69 fish, including crucian carp, common carp, grass carp, bream, and pike perch. During the pre-trial investigation, the illegal catch was stored in a specialized facility.
According to the engineering and ecological expertise, the harm caused to the state amounted to nearly 209 thousand hryvnias.
The fisherman did not deny his guilt, explaining that he was aware of the prohibition on catching biological resources with gill nets but still used them for personal purposes.
During the pre-trial investigation, under the supervision of the Izmail District Prosecutor's Office, police established all circumstances of the violation, gathered sufficient evidence, and charged the individual with illegal fishing that caused significant damage. The indictment was sent to court under part 1 of Article 249 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The maximum penalty prescribed by this article is three years of restriction of liberty.
