Strengthening Ties: Odesa and Varna Collaborate

07 October 2025

The Mayor of Odesa, Gennady Trukhanov, met with Hristo Vidolov Hristov, the mayor of the Mladost district in Varna, with the support of Mr. Mark Petrov, the ambassador of Odesa in Bulgaria.

This meeting highlighted the friendship between Odesa and Varna, rooted in deep historical connections, as ancient Odessos existed where modern Varna stands.

«We share many commonalities that shape our relationships and open new avenues for development. Varna, a coastal city, welcomed many residents from Odesa during the conflict, who integrated into the local community while preserving the Odesa spirit,» remarked Mayor Hristov.

Gennady Trukhanov announced the Bulgarian Culture Days scheduled for the end of October in Odesa, supported by the consulate.

The Mayor of Odesa invited his Bulgarian counterpart to participate in the events and discuss potential joint initiatives. They also addressed the recent natural disasters affecting both cities.

Mr. Hristov reported that due to the abnormal rainfall in Bulgaria on October 3, six fatalities have been confirmed, with expectations of the toll rising. Odesa experienced a severe downpour on September 30 that also claimed lives. These events serve as painful reminders of our cities' vulnerabilities and the importance of international cooperation in addressing and preventing climate-related challenges.
