Celebrating Ukraine's Flag Day: Symbols and Significance

On August 23, Ukraine celebrates Flag Day, marking the importance of its national symbol.

This day was established to honor the long history of Ukrainian statehood and to strengthen respect for national symbols, according to a presidential decree from 2004. Since 2009, official flag-raising ceremonies have been held across the country.

The blue and yellow colors of the flag have roots in the history of Kyivan Rus and the Galician-Volhynian state. During the "Spring of Nations" in 1848, this flag became a symbol of the Ukrainian people, and in June of that year, it was first raised in Lviv. The official recognition of the blue and yellow flag occurred during the proclamation of the Ukrainian People's Republic.

In 1990, the national flag was first raised over the town hall in Stryi, and in Kyiv – in July. On August 23, 1991, the blue-yellow banner was brought into the session hall of the Verkhovna Rada, and on September 4, it was ceremoniously raised over the parliament.

After the onset of aggression from Russia, the flag became a symbol of the struggle for freedom.

President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Ukrainians on Flag Day, emphasizing that Ukraine will not give up its land.

He noted that the flag symbolizes hope for many Ukrainians in temporarily occupied territories. "We will not give our land to the occupiers," he said.

Zelensky also highlighted that the flag is significant for thousands of soldiers risking their lives for Ukraine. It has become a symbol of salvation for those returning from captivity.

"There is no capital in the world that respects life but does not respect our flag. Where life is valued, Ukraine is valued," the President added.

He thanked everyone supporting the state.

The flag has become not only a symbol of Ukraine but also an embodiment of its values, noted the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

"Today, our flag embodies freedom and humanity," he wrote on social media.

The minister expressed gratitude to those who support Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of partnership for achieving peace.
