The Crucial Role of Prisoner Exchange in Negotiations
During a press briefing in Washington following talks at the White House, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the exchange of military and civilian prisoners should be an integral part of the negotiation process.
Zelensky conveyed this during the briefing.
“The First Lady and the team in the United States recognize that they will engage in the critical and challenging issue of returning Ukrainian children,” he remarked. “We discussed this with the U.S. President, and he agrees that it is a complicated system, but he will assist me regarding the exchange of everyone for everyone. It’s not just about military prisoners, but also civilians – journalists and political prisoners. We agreed to work on this,” Zelensky emphasized.
It is worth noting that Trump previously stated that a potential prisoner exchange could occur after a trilateral meeting involving the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia. He mentioned that Russia would accept security guarantees for Ukraine, but partners need to discuss “who will do what, essentially.”
