Why is the Black Sea Blooming?

10 August 2025

What causes the water in the Black Sea to bloom? Environmental inspectors are testing for pollutants in the water.

This was reported by the State Environmental Inspection of the Southwestern District.

In recent weeks, the coastline of Odessa has been affected by a massive accumulation of algae, with waves washing them ashore, causing the water to take on unnatural shades of green, yellow, or brown.

This is typically a seasonal phenomenon associated with rising water temperatures; however, excessive pollution in the sea may also trigger water "blooming".

To clarify the situation, inspectors from the Southwestern District have collected sea water samples within Odessa, particularly in areas where algae create a solid layer on the surface. Investigations are ongoing, and results will be published after laboratory analysis is complete.
