New Opportunities for Military Service: Law for Older Citizens
On July 29, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a new law that permits citizens aged 60 and above to join the military service on a contract basis.
The law stipulates that during martial law, with the written consent of the unit commander, individuals recognized as fit by a military medical commission can be enlisted. These servicemen are eligible for non-combat roles within the ranks of privates, sergeants, or officers. Contracts for those over 60 are set for one year with an option for extension. For officers of this age, approval from the General Staff of the Armed Forces is mandatory. These contract personnel will undergo a two-month probationary period, and if they do not meet the standards, the contract will be terminated.
If martial law is lifted or canceled, all such contracts automatically become void.
