Jackals Adventures in Tuzlov Estuaries

07 July 2025

Recent updates from the Tuzlov Estuaries National Park highlight the life of jackals. A camera trap captured a young jackal (Canis aureus) exploring its environment.

According to biologist Ivan Rusev, this golden dog is independently navigating the area near the Black Sea, without adult supervision.

Jackals are no more harmful than wolves or foxes and pose no threat to humans. They are small mammals, slightly larger than foxes or smaller than wolves, typically weighing between 12 and 14 kilograms. This omnivorous predator consumes fruits, insects, reptiles, birds and their eggs, rodents, and hares, and is also known to scavenge and attack weakened larger predators.
