Beware: The Venomous Spider in Ukraine
During the summer months in southern Ukraine, particularly in the Odessa region, the risk of encountering the venomous black widow spider increases.
From late July to September is the peak activity period for these dangerous arachnids, warns the Odessa regional center for disease control and prevention.
The greatest threat to humans comes from the adult female black widow, which has a glossy black body and a bulbous abdomen up to 2 cm in diameter. Males are smaller with bright red spots outlined in white. A male's bite is usually harmless, as he cannot penetrate human skin.
“If bitten by a black widow, it is crucial to seek medical attention immediately. The condition of a bite victim deteriorates rapidly: general weakness, abdominal pain, fever, sweating, cramps, and urinary retention may occur. This can be life-threatening,” warns entomologist Victoria Naphanyuk from the Odessa CDC.
What to do if bitten
“The venom of the black widow breaks down at high temperatures. Applying a lit match to the bite site within the first few minutes can help ease the victim's condition. Therefore, we recommend always carrying matches with you — whether in the garden or outdoors,” advises Victoria Naphanyuk.
It is recommended to work in garden areas with thick gloves and closed footwear; do not leave shoes outside, especially in the shade; and regularly check areas for the presence of cocoons and burn them along with dry vegetation.
“The black widow is indeed a very dangerous creature. Simple safety measures can prevent serious consequences. Stay cautious!” concludes the entomologist.
