Innovations in Rehabilitation: Adaptive Sports for Veterans

03 April 2025

The Odessa City Health Department is actively enhancing the rehabilitation system for Ukraine's defenders by incorporating adaptive sports. Recently, a meeting was held at the city hall to discuss the correction of stress-related conditions in military personnel through wellness programs and esports.

Specialists from various medical facilities attended the meeting, including rehabilitation specialists, physical therapists, and psychologists, along with representatives from the Department of Physical Culture and Sports.

Vasyl Rybak, head of the rehabilitation department, discussed the positive effects of esports and virtual reality on physical, psychological, and cognitive health aspects. He noted that participating in sports can significantly improve brain functions, emotional stability, sleep quality, and self-discipline.

The main goal of this initiative is to develop a prevention and treatment program for stress disorders that will include international methodologies and experiences from various countries. The program aims to combine physical and virtual activities.

It is proposed to establish working groups to implement esports in rehabilitation medical facilities, which will receive unified methodological recommendations for individualized rehabilitation programs.

It is expected that the introduction of esports will help improve the physical condition of patients, reduce stress levels, and create communities for social support through team games.

Veterans who successfully rehabilitated through adaptive sports also attended the meeting, sharing their positive experiences, and demonstrating virtual reality systems for individuals with disabilities.
