The Critical Need for Blood Donation Amidst War
As the full-scale war enters its fourth year, the demand for blood donations remains exceptionally high. Medical professionals recognize the significance of having a steady supply of blood to save the lives of Ukraine's defenders and civilian patients.
This week in Odesa, the team at Primary Health Care Center No. 16 conducted its twelfth joint blood donation event since the war began. Around twenty donors arrived at the blood transfusion station, ready to share their strength to save others. A single blood donation can save up to three lives.
“Our medical facility has developed a group of regular donors. Each time, new participants join, and we encourage our friends, family, and patients to donate blood. We are ready to donate every two months — it’s safe, beneficial, and, of course, greatly needed by our defenders right now,” said the director of PHC Center No. 16, Anna Pavlega.
Blood donation provides:
- prevention of cardiovascular diseases, thrombosis, heart attacks, and strokes;
- prevention of various types of cancers, particularly those linked to excess iron;
- renewal of the blood-forming system and the body as a whole;
- regular blood donors live 3-5 years longer;
- the ability to save others.
Currently, blood donation is a vital contribution to Ukraine's defense capabilities.
Current needs for blood donations in Odesa's medical institutions are shared on the Telegram channels “Odesa. Official” and “Donor Odesa,” with the support of the Department of Information and Digital Solutions of the Odessa City Council.
Since the onset of the war, approximately 13,500 blood donations have been facilitated by the “Donor Odesa” project, saving thousands of lives!
The “Donor Odesa” project actively participates in the annual city charity initiative “Weeks of Good Deeds.”
