OpenAI Prepares to Launch Its First Hardware Device
OpenAI is set to unveil its first hardware product, as stated by Chris Lehan, the company's global affairs director, during the Axios House Davos event. He mentioned that the company is already 'on track' to officially showcase the device in the latter half of 2026.
This aligns with industry predictions that anticipate a commercial launch of OpenAI's hardware product in 2027; however, this year's announcement has already sparked significant interest within the industry.
The team led by Jony Ive at OpenAI has been strengthened by the addition of former Apple employee Janum Trivedi, who previously worked on SpringBoard and developed features such as Split View and Multitasking Drag & Drop for iPadOS 15. Trivedi has joined the OpenAI × LoveFrom design team, focusing on the io products.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and former Apple designer Jony Ive announced their collaboration last May to create a family of hardware products for AI. Recently, they confirmed that the first prototype is already complete, and development is ongoing.
Earlier this month, The Information reported that OpenAI is enhancing its audio models ahead of the hardware product launch that will primarily focus on audio capabilities.
Thus, 2026 could mark a significant step for OpenAI in the realm of its own hardware development.
