Energy Challenges in the AI Industry

03 November 2025

Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, pointed out the critical issue of energy shortages necessary to power the graphics processors in the artificial intelligence sector. He shared his thoughts during a joint interview with OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman, as reported by Tom's Hardware.

"The main issue we are facing now is not a lack of computational power, but electricity – the ability to quickly build data centers near energy sources. If we don’t do this, we might end up in a situation where a lot of chips are just sitting in warehouses because I can’t connect them. That’s my problem today," Nadella stated.

A similar challenge is being faced by NVIDIA. After overcoming the shortage of AI accelerators, the company is now focused on securing their energy supply. Many tech giants are investing in alternative power sources, including nuclear energy, to supply their data centers. These changes have already affected the rising electricity bills for consumers in the United States.

For instance, Microsoft has signed a deal to revive a closed nuclear power plant at a cost of $1.6 billion. Other companies are making similar moves; Meta has signed a contract with XGS Energy to supply 150 MW of geothermal energy and purchase from nuclear facilities. AWS announced a $500 million investment in nuclear power. Google has made an agreement for the supply of clean energy, which will provide up to 3 gigawatts of electricity in the U.S. and announced the location of its first nuclear reactor.
