Introducing Mico: Microsoft’s New Virtual Assistant

Microsoft has unveiled Mico – a cutting-edge virtual character for the voice mode of Copilot, serving as a modern interpretation of the iconic Clippy from Microsoft Office. This new assistant responds to user input in real-time, expressing emotions through animation and facial expressions.
Jacob Andrew, Microsoft AI’s VP of Products and Development, explained that Mico is designed to make interaction with Copilot feel more organic: "Technology takes a backseat – you’re simply engaging with a charming animated figure and building a connection with it."
Currently, Mico is available only in the USA, with animations activated by default in the voice mode of Copilot. The assistant utilizes an updated memory system that enables it to remember facts about the user and their work.
Microsoft is also introducing the Learn Live mode, transforming Mico into an interactive tutor that aids users in educational topics through visual prompts and a virtual whiteboard – a feature aimed at students and language learners.
The launch of Mico is part of Microsoft's strategy to create a unique "personality" for Copilot. Previously, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman stated that the assistant would have a stable identity and even a "virtual room."
Mico also accompanies a new advertising campaign promoting Windows 11 as a "computer you can talk to." The company hopes that Mico will help users engage more naturally with AI, although it faces the challenging task of convincing people that talking to a computer is normal.
According to Andrew, Mico contains an Easter egg dedicated to Clippy: if users tap the character quickly, they can witness a special reaction – a nostalgic "hello" from the past.
Additionally, Microsoft recently introduced the experimental Copilot Portraits feature, allowing users to choose animated human faces for Copilot.
