Meta Transitions to Web Version of WhatsApp for Windows
Meta has revealed a change in its approach to WhatsApp on Windows, opting for a web application instead of a native one. This comes just months after the release of the native version for iPad, as reported by The Verge.
Now, WhatsApp on Windows will no longer be a standalone app that supports Windows UI elements, but will operate as a web app wrapped using Microsoft Edge WebView2. This allows Meta to maintain a single codebase and accelerate development, but the new version will consume more RAM and the interface will appear less 'native' to Windows 11.
The updated beta version also includes new features such as support for WhatsApp Channels, enhanced status options, and community features. However, overall, the application has become simpler, with a streamlined settings interface and altered notifications.
This decision has disappointed many users, as Meta had recently emphasized the benefits of native apps, including improved performance and stability.
It’s worth noting that the native version of WhatsApp for Windows lasted only a few years and allowed users to access the messenger without being tethered to a smartphone.
