Changes in Microsoft Authenticator: Password Loss and New Authentication Methods
Microsoft has announced significant changes to its Authenticator app. Starting from June 2025, users will be unable to add new passwords, and by August, all existing passwords will be deleted. This decision will affect those who prefer to keep their passwords within the app.
However, users will still be able to use passkeys for logging into various services. This will help maintain security without the need to remember complex passwords.
For users who stay within the Microsoft ecosystem, it is recommended to use the Edge browser, where saved passwords can be viewed via the built-in password manager. Those not using Edge should consider other password managers like 1Password, LastPass, or Bitwarden, which support various platforms.
These changes are part of Microsoft’s strategy to enhance security and transition to modern authentication methods that reduce the risks associated with password breaches. Passkeys available in Authenticator provide a higher level of protection and convenience.
Users are advised to export their passwords from Microsoft Authenticator to another manager in advance to avoid access issues with important accounts after August 2025.
