Edge Browser Enhancements: AI Integration for Web Applications

20 May 2025

During the Build 2025 conference, Microsoft announced the launch of new application programming interfaces (APIs) for the Edge browser, enabling web developers to directly integrate artificial intelligence into web applications through Edge. This was reported by The Verge.

The APIs provide access to the Phi-4-mini model, which operates locally on the device and boasts 3.8 billion parameters. This allows web applications to utilize AI for generating, editing, and summarizing text without needing a connection to cloud services. Microsoft also plans to release a text translation API, further enhancing the capabilities of local AI.

The company positions these APIs as potential web standards that will be compatible with other AI models and will function across various platforms, including macOS.

Developers can already test the new APIs in the Edge Canary and Dev versions. This adds competitive capabilities to the Edge browser against Google Chrome, which also offers similar APIs for text, image generation, and translation.
