Google and NVIDIA: Leaders in Generative AI Patent Filings

Google has outpaced IBM to become the frontrunner in patent applications within the field of generative artificial intelligence, as reported by Axios based on IFI Claims data.

In recent months, the number of patent applications related to generative AI in the United States has surged by over 50%, indicating a vigorous development of new technologies.

The leaders in the agent AI patent landscape in the U.S. include Google and NVIDIA, followed by IBM, Intel, and Microsoft. In the global ranking, the same companies lead, with three Chinese universities entering the top 10, highlighting the intensifying competition between the U.S. and China.

Prominent companies filing patents for generative AI in the U.S. include Google, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Capital One, Samsung, Adobe, Intel, and Qualcomm. Interestingly, Meta and OpenAI did not make it to the top 10, as Meta focuses on open source, while OpenAI states its intention to use patents solely for protective purposes.

From February 2024 to April 2025, the number of patent applications in the U.S. related to generative AI increased by 56%, with issued patents rising by 32%. Generative AI constitutes 17% of patent applications in the U.S., while agent AI accounts for 7%.
