Celebrating 60 Years of Friendship: Odessa and Yokohama

29 April 2025

Odessa marks a significant milestone in its relationship with Yokohama.

Throughout the week, Odessa is hosting Days of Japanese Culture dedicated to this landmark anniversary.

Today, the Central Library named after I.Ya. Franko became a hub for the enchanting world of Japanese culture.

Creative groups of children and young artists from Odessa showcased the rich traditions and unique identity of Japan.

The Japanese Ambassador to Ukraine, Mr. Masashi Nakagome, in his video greeting emphasized the importance of cultural collaboration between our nations.

The City Hall of Yokohama also participated in the celebration with a video presentation, allowing guests to learn more about our sister city.

“Odessa is honored to call Japan a friend. Exactly 60 years ago, we became sister cities with Yokohama. Our relationship is a model of stable international friendship and cultural exchange,” stated Ivan Liptuga, Director of the Department of International Cooperation.

Yokohama provides assistance on multiple levels: Odessa receives vital humanitarian support and organizes exchanges for youth in arts and sports. Together we are rebuilding facilities after attacks and developing a post-war recovery plan.

This is a story of true friendship that transcends borders and cultural differences.

The best way for Odessans to express gratitude is to engage with this beautiful culture and honor our partnership.
